Why U of T’s new EngEd program matters to leadership educators and students

The Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering recently announced the EngEd— Canada’s first masters and PhD-level program in engineering education in collaboration with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).

This collaboration provides a stronger framework for scholarship in the field of engineering leadership education. The EngEd allows greater cross-pollination of ideas between researchers informed by the social sciences and those with an engineering background. Engineering leadership education can now grow within this new institutional infrastructure and benefit from shared expertise between Engineering departments and OISE, Canada’s largest and most research-intensive faculty of education.

The announcement comes after months of focused leadership by ILead Associate Director Prof. Greg Evans, who chaired the task force that proposed the initiative: “By focusing on cross-disciplinary collaboration, we look forward to wonderful new ideas and insights that enhance engineering education for generations to come.” Said Evans.

The creation of the EngEd is a milestone. U of T Engineering demonstrates its commitment to pedagogical excellence into the 21st century. As ILead continues to grow its suite of academic courses and its research capacity, the timing of this new collaborative program is outstanding. Emboldened by this development during National Engineering Month, ILead looks forward to greater integration with the broader leadership development community of scholars at the University.
