Description:
The Troost Institute for Leadership Education for Engineering (Troost ILead) in ISTEP at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in artificial intelligence and sustainable design. This position is part of a collaborative research project funded through the Acceleration Consortium to examine how social, economic and environmental parameters are being determined and incorporated by research teams as they use self-driving lab (SDL) technology to accelerate the development of new materials. The position will be part of an interdisciplinary team supervised by Prof. Emily Moore in partnership with machine-learning start-up Sunthetics. Qualifications:
The position requires a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field with experience in green chemistry and/or sustainability. The initial appointment term is for one year with the possibility of extension. Preference given to candidates with experience with:
- Strong background in green chemistry, materials development and/or sustainability
- Experience in science communication, policy or education is an asset
- Knowledge of automation and high-throughput experiments is an asset
- Experience with social science methodology an asset
- Knowledge of life cycle analysis and technoeconomic assessment is an asset
- Familiarity with machine learning is an asset
Duties:
- Responsible for systematic literature review on current state of sustainability criteria inclusion in material design processes
- Conduct interviews with SDL researchers as well as government/policy stakeholders and environmental organizations to establish current practice and identify gaps
- Design and facilitate group workshops with diverse stakeholders to develop sustainable design criteria
- Review scientific literature, execute research projects and report on their progress through oral and written reports and scientific journal articles
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Present research at local, national and international meetings
- Interface with industry and academic partners effectively
- Coordinate research projects and meetings as appropriate
- Assist the Principal Investigator in preparing manuscripts and proposals.
- Perform other additional duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the research group

This is a 12-month term position with the possibility of renewal.
Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement.
The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.
