About

Explore your role as an engineering changemaker! In this three-part workshop, Beyond Equity 101, you’ll redefine engineering leadership using an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) mindset. You’ll then learn to use liberatory design to create a plan to lead change in your club, course, research project or professional team.

Join us to think through ways to create, lead, and influence from a place of equity, diversity and inclusion.

Dates:

  • Part I: Introduction to EDI Pre-Work Module – open from Nov 12-18, (asynchronous – 1 hr)
  • Part II: Equity and Leadership – Sat Nov 20, 1-3 pm EST (live on Zoom – 2 hrs)
  • Part III: Taking Action with Liberatory Design – Mon Nov 22, 6-7 pm EST (live on Zoom – 1 hr)

This session is open to undergraduate and graduate students. You can register as an individual; however, we encourage you to register with a team member (e.g., labmate, team member on student club or course project).

Attend all three parts to receive a Certificate of Completion and CCR.

Workshop Schedule

Part I: Introduction to EDI Pre-Work Module – open from Nov 12-18 (asynchronous – 1 hr)

This asynchronous module addresses foundational concepts  of equity, diversity and inclusion through videos and interactive activities. You must complete this module to participate in the live workshops.

The pre-work module will be available on Fri Nov 12 via Quercus (more information to come), and must be completed by Thurs Nov 18 at 12:00 pm EST.  Those who complete the pre-work will receive links to attend Parts II and III.

Part II: Equity and Leadership – Sat Nov 20, 1-3 pm EST (live on Zoom – 2 hrs)

This workshop is a live (virtual) session that provides frameworks, models, and opportunities for reflection on the intersection of EDI and leadership. You will reflect on your identity and explore the concept of inclusive leadership.

Part III: Taking Action with Liberatory Design – Mon Nov 22, 6-7 pm EST (live on Zoom – 1 hr)

This workshop is a live (virtual) session where you will use liberatory design to apply EDI to your context – whether that be a student club leader, graduate researcher, or practicing engineer in a course project or work-term. You will leave this session with ideas and action to lead change.

Participant Expectations & Technological Requirements

Both live sessions are interactive and participatory (not a traditional lecture or webinar). You will be required to actively engage in activities and small group conversations using your personal computer’s audio and, if possible, video. The ideal learning environment is a quiet space that is free of distractions. We ask that you turn off (or silence) email and any computer/phone notifications. We will use Zoom. Make sure to download Zoom before the program. Recording any sessions (including audio) or taking screenshots is not permitted.
